Robotics Software Engineer

As a robotics engineer at Lobster Robotics you will be working on our robot and processing software stacks, on anything from high level decision making, to low level control. You will be responsible for developing, implementing and testing new algorithms for controlling the robot, as well as writing more general robot software. You will be working hands-on, developing robust and performant software for autonomous robots operating in remote and hostile environments. It’s a unique role: as part of the development cycle, extensive field testing is often required, so at times you will join the offshore operations to evaluate your work in action in the open ocean. You will take the responsibility over a large part of the codebase that runs on the underwater robots

Full-time
Delft, NL

Company Summary

Are you looking for a challenging position that brings software development to the real world? Lobster Robotics is a deep-tech startup developing advanced autonomous underwater vehicles for seabed exploration and monitoring. Our millimetre resolution data allows our clients to search the seabed for historical artifacts, to monitor pristine cold water reefs, and identify the right location for developing sustainable offshore wind. With currently 9 enthusiastic people we are working to improve, test, and commercialize our robotics technology. We are currently seeking a full-time robotics software design engineer to join our growing team.

What we are looking for

  • A robotics guru

  • A hands-on developer

  • Someone who takes ownership of their work

  • Someone excited to develop code that interacts with hardware

  • Someone eager to work in a multidisciplinary engineering team of mechanical, electrical, embedded, control and software engineers.

We think you’ll need these things to handle the responsibilities:

  • Completed MSc studies in control or robotics engineering  or >1 year of relevant work experience.

  • Demonstrated experience in working with real hardware.

  • Proven ability to make reality from an idea.

  • Great attention to detail.

  • Experience with GNU/Linux.

  • Proficiency in Python and a system programming language.

  • Experience with Rust is nice to have, but not required.

  • Eligible to work in the Netherlands.

Who are we?

With a team of nine enthusiastic individuals, we are passionately working on what interests us the most: complex technology and exploring the unknown underwater. Did you know that 70% of the Earth's surface is ocean, but we know less about it than we do about the surface of Mars? Our founders started this venture in 2018 during their studies out of a shared passion, and have since developed it into a startup. Despite our predominantly technical backgrounds, we have diverse personalities and interests: diving, karate, photography, hiking, climbing, sunbathing, you name it.

At the office, we work hard, but there's always time for a joke or a good conversation. Sometimes we travel abroad for a project or a trade show, and even more often, we head out to various locations in Europe to test our technology. This makes the work very diverse. What makes working at Lobster enjoyable is that you can immediately see the impact of what you do, and in a small team, you can get things done very quickly. If someone comes up with an improvement, you can design and implement it the same day. The following week, you can test it directly in the field.

We are based at YES!Delft, adjacent to the TU Delft campus. We share the building with around 80 other innovative startups and have access to facilities like a cafeteria, meeting rooms, showers, parking, and many community activities. We occupy an (air-conditioned) 40m2 office and a workshop space of the same size.

“At Lobster, I get to learn something new everyday. And most importantly, I’m working on cool robots that do ocean exploration!”

Joris Quist, Lead Software at Lobster Robotics

Our values

What we find very important are clarity, ingenuity, and safety. For example, if something doesn’t work out, that’s okay as long as you communicate it clearly, find a different way to solve it, and, of course, keep it safe! As long as you can work within these core values, you’ll fit right in with us.

Speaking of values, we believe it's important to leave the world a better place than we found it. By using our autonomous technology, instead of a solution that requires a large ship, we save tons of CO2 per hectare that is mapped. Additionally, the detailed seabed maps we create help researchers and policymakers to protect and restore nature more effectively. Our robots can also be deployed to monitor the safety of critical underwater infrastructure (such as cables from offshore wind farms), ensuring that any potential sabotage is detected and prevented in time. As an employee at Lobster, you will also contribute to this positive impact on the world.

What we offer you

  • Varied, challenging work with a lot of personal responsibility

  • Room to explore what you enjoy and grow in that direction

  • A comfortable workplace in an inspiring environment (there’s always something happening in the main hall)

  • Friendly colleagues who are happy to help you out

  • Young team: average age 26 years

  • Easily accessible by car, bike, or public transport

  • A market-conforming salary and 30 vacation days
